Bedding Down In The Borders
We wheeled our bikes out of the railway station in Berwick in the early evening and headed off more or less alongside the River Tweed on the first leg of an exploration of the Scottish Borders. In our panniers, we had everything we needed for a self-contained trip. Everything, that is, except food for more than a day at a time. With our mobility, and the wealth of towns and villages, that was not going to be a problem.

Around Loch Lomond And The Trossachs
For too long, I had sped past on my way north to the Highlands and Hebrides. Despite passing Arrochar and its Alps, the lure of the north held me in thrall. It was several years before I finally made it to the summit of the most spectacular peak Ben Arthur, better known as The Cobbler.

Wild Winter Camping
After a long day spent backpacking in the Cairngorms, it was a relief to head downhill to our planned pitch for the night. Despite the energy-sapping deep snow, the day had been glorious as had the weather. Warm, dry and comfortable in layers of high tech clothing, we were determined to get camp set up long before it got dark.

Exploring The Backbone Of England
It was a book found in a charity shop that prompted the regular exploration on the Pennine range forming a natural boundary in the north of England between east and west over hundreds of miles. In W. A. Poucher’s The Backbone of England he describes ‘a galaxy of loveliness in the valleys and in the charming villages which are dotted about them.’ He was quite right in 1946 and the description holds true today.
