An alliance of walking and cycling organisations has urged the UK Government to seriously commit to funding significant improvements in active travel, following the publication last month of a report on active travel by the Commons Transport Select Committee.

UK Govt Wants Kids To Head Outdoors

Last month, UK Education Secretary Damian Hinds launched #SummerOutdoors which will suggest free or low-cost options to keep children entertained and spark interest in character-building activities during the summer break. Children and families will be encouraged to explore the outdoors during the summer holidays, as a series of fun tips and events for kids happening across the country will be signposted each week.

Forest School Methods Have Positive Impacts

New research, published last month in the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) publication, The Geographical Journal, reveals that children enjoy Forest School activities yet some children struggle to frame the skills and knowledge they develop in these more informal settings as educational when compared with traditional learning activities that are associated with the current National Curriculum.
