Alpine Hikers Battle Bed Bugs
According to the DAV, its mountain huts are very suitable habitats for bedbugs because of the many corners, cracks and crevices. Their distribution is aided by infected objects as, without realising it, mountaineers and climbers may carry hitchhiking bugs in their backpacks from hut to hut.

Exploring The Backbone Of England
It was a book found in a charity shop that prompted the regular exploration on the Pennine range forming a natural boundary in the north of England between east and west over hundreds of miles. In W. A. Poucher’s The Backbone of England he describes ‘a galaxy of loveliness in the valleys and in the charming villages which are dotted about them.’ He was quite right in 1946 and the description holds true today.

Hands On Outdoor Footwear
A visit to Alt-Berg in Richmond, Yorkshire a few years ago gave me the idea of exploring the development of a new boot model. Mike Sheehan, the owner and senior boot maker, agreed to help and the stage was set. Alt-Berg makes classic designed leather boots, using the best materials and, where appropriate, new technology with the emphasis on good bootmaking and good boot fitting.

Maine is larger than the other five New England states combined with great outdoor experiences ranging from lazy days at the beach to hiking and mountain biking. While Acadia National Park is well-known, there are 48 Maine State Parks waiting to be explored, include coastal parks such as Cobscook Bay and lakeside parks like Mount Blue and Lily Bay.

German trade publication Outdoor.markt held its annual Trophy Awards in Munich this month at the new Outdoor by ISPO trade fair. The ‘Outdoor Oscar’ for Personality of the Year was presented to Nick Brown, owner and founder of Nikwax and Páramo, for over 40 years of pioneering and driving change within the industry.
